The Book of Joshua

Before we read Joshua, we need to explain why we are skipping, temporarily, Deuteronomy. Scholars recognize that Deuteronomy, in the form we read today, was written in the 7th century B.C. It is a hugely important book, but we will read it in context alongside other books of its time.

For now, we’ll read through Joshua. It’s got 24 chapters.

Week One: Joshua 1-6

Week Two: Joshua 7-12

Week Three: Joshua 13-17

Week Four: Joshua 18-24

Before you begin your daily or weekly reading, you may want to visit our Guided Prayer pages or visit the spiritual formation page in order to center yourself without distractions in more prayerful reading.

The main purpose of Joshua is to show how God fulfilled the promise of giving land to Israel.  The book doesn’t claim to be either a full nor complete history of Canaan’s conquest, but does show God guiding the people and revealing Himself to the people through amazing acts. If Exodus dates to around 1447 B.C., then the conquest into Canaan dates to about 1400 B.C.
