Devotional from Pastor Carrie… Matthew 9:35-38 William Sloan Coffin once said, “It is terribly important to realize that the leap of faith is not so much a leap of thought as of action. For while in many matters it is first we must see, then we will act; in matters of faith it is first we must do then we will know, first we will be and then we will see. One must, in short, dare to act wholeheartedly without absolute certainty…I love the recklessness of faith. First you leap, and then you grow wings.”[1]
Jesus looked out at our sad and sorry world and commented, “they (are) like sheep without a shepherd.” Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
When we realize that faith grows by action, we also realize that Jesus’ prayer for laborers is also a prayer that all of us have greater faith. His prayer is that we will leap and then sprout wings!
This Spring my family watched while a mama and papa bird built a nest, laid eggs, fed the hatchlings and then taught the four baby birds to fly. It was wonderful entertainment to watch the little ones proudly leap and hop from branch to branch in a nearby bush with the parent birds chirping them on. God is like those parents, encouraging us to fly. First we must leap, and then we will grow wings. It’s a matter of laborers for God’s harvest and also a matter of us living abundantly not in fear but in faith.
Leap and fly!
